France’s leather industry maintained a €5.8 billion trade surplus in 2024, despite facing challenges like weakened international demand and a 4% revenue drop in tanneries. While exports to Italy rose by +19%, markets like Turkey and Spain showed steep declines.

Mauro Bergozza has been appointed president of Assomac, succeeding Maria Vittoria Brustia. The announcement came during the Assomac General Assembly in Milan. Bergozza, a seasoned leader from Bergi S.p.A., aims to strengthen technological identity, promote “Made in Italy,” and foster strategic alliances.

The Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) has joined forces with the Congressional Slow Fashion Caucus to champion sustainable fashion. This initiative, backed by brands like Patagonia and The RealReal, promotes climate-smart policies to reduce waste and encourage long-lasting products.

FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY NEWS

Spain’s footwear sector is thriving, with exports of 124.6 million pairs in the first eight months of 2024, earning €2.43 billion a rise of 11% in volume and 7.4% in value from 2023. Top markets include Italy (€494M), France (€405.1M), and Germany (€235.7M).

Dior is taking control of its supply chain with a new industrial division led by Giorgio Striano, starting January 2025. Nicolas Carré joins as Industrial Director for leather goods, footwear, and jewelry. These moves aim to boost production while addressing concerns about supplier practices.
