Two workers lost their lives on Saturday morning, 24 January 2026, after inhaling poisonous gas inside a private tannery in Pernambut, Vellore district.

According to the official data from the China Leather Industry Association, sales revenue of key leather companies (tanneries) fell by 9.3% in the first 11 months compared to last year.

“This zero duty is going to be a big push. This was one major advantage which Vietnam had. Now Indian exporters can look at this as a big advantage to bring the business from Vietnam and China to India”

Exports of footwear reached 8.18 billion pairs, down 1.3% from 2024. In value terms, exports earned $37.64 billion, a fall of 10.7% year-on-year.

Fashion and Leather Goods remained the backbone of LVMH in 2025, this division recorded revenue of €37.77 billion in 2025. This marked a decline from 2024 but trends improved clearly in the second half of the year as local customer demand stayed solid.

If we take a closer look at the leather garments sector alone, the exports amounted to $120 million in value, up by 2.6% compared to the same period last year, while imports amounted to USD $110 million in value, with an increase of 1.1% YOY.
