Prime Minister Narendra Modi met exporters from key labour-intensive sectors including leather industry on Monday to discuss ways to strengthen India’s position in global trade, according to industry representatives.

Indian exporters have called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in after the United States imposed a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has shaken several labor-intensive industries including leather, footwear, textiles and handicrafts.

Bangladesh’s leather industry once hailed as the country’s “next big export story” continues to remain stuck in what many now call the billion-dollar cage.

Four companies have signed land lease agreements with the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (Bepza) to invest a total of $111.26 million in the Bepza Economic Zone at Mirsharai, Chattogram.

A top government committee in Bangladesh is finalising a major plan to transfer control of the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate from the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) to the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA)

Five Brazilian tanneries have returned home with strong results after showcasing their leather collections at ANPIC, Mexico’s top trade fair for footwear and accessories materials, held from October 22 to 24 in León.

Tunisia’s leather and footwear industry posted a strong performance in 2024, as exports covered 163.9% of imports, reaching a total value of 2,182 million dinars

Jordan’s leather and garment exports have grown 3% from January to August this year compared to the same period in 2024, showing the sector’s strong ability to withstand regional instability and global trade challenges.
