The government is planning to cut customs duties on seven tanning chemicals to help struggling tanneries, addressing industry concerns about high taxes and unfair competition that have left many at a disadvantage.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal has urged the footwear and leather industry to adopt global standards and innovation. The sector’s exports increased by 25% to $5.7 billion, with expectations to cross $6.5 billion this year.
“Special emphasis was laid on upgrading testing infrastructure, promoting innovation and aligning with international benchmarks to make India a quality-conscious and globally trusted manufacturing hub.”
For the first time in 35 years, Bangladesh has temporarily lifted its ban on raw and wet blue leather exports, aiming to stabilize prices and revive demand in key markets like China, Italy, and South Korea.
The Bangladesh government has raised rawhide & skin prices by Tk 5-7 per square foot, set new minimums, and introduced export rule relaxations to boost local hide trade and prevent wastage during the Eid season.
