The French leather industry also reported imports of €133.4 million between January - March 2026, a 2% increase from €131.3 million in Q1 2025.

The project will convert leather processing waste into industrial use salt and help reduce the environmental impact of leather manufacturing.

The project was jointly supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Export Development Fund (EDF-GoP) and the Punjab Environment Protection Department (EPD).

The delegation also urged the State Government to establish hostel facilities for women workforce in Ambur and Ranipet region and stated that the industry is willing to facilitate land availability for the project.

The publication was prepared under the guidance of Ivan Kral, Head of the Rural Development, Agro-Industries & Industrial Parks Unit, UNIDO and delivered by SPIN 360 led by Federico Brugnoli, with contributions from a 55 member advisory group representing the international leather industry across 16 countries.

The company stated that they will convert the leather waste into biochar, a stable carbon rich material that can help improve soil health and support long term carbon storage.

The Government of India is expanding its leather, footwear and accessories manufacturing infrastructure with new Mega Leather, Footwear and Accessories Clusters (MLFACs) scheme across multiple states.

The partnership will also benefit from the group’s full-chain expertise across the leather value chain. This will help improve product standards and manufacturing systems, aiming to give consumers better access to active lifestyle products.

He said leather exports have stayed stagnant at around $1-$1.15 billion per year for the last three years due to structural challenges.
